Strabismus (misaligned eyes) in adult patients usually results from injury, disease, thyroid problems, or untreated or unsuccessfully treated strabismus from childhood. Depending on the cause of the misalignment, some patients can also have double vision.
Many patients with strabismus have been told that their misaligned eyes could not be treated successfully. Advances in the management of misaligned eyes now provide treatment options for most adults. Treatment generally involves eye muscle surgery, eye exercises, and/or prism glasses.
Surgery to align the eyes is not considered a "cosmetic" procedure. Properly aligned eyes can improve depth perception and field of vision. Additionally, most patients report improved self-esteem and communication skills.
